Jekyl’s World
- An Open Letter to the people of the world from a United
States citizen
I
am sorry. Sorry for your troubles
and your pain and your strife. I am sorry that our President is bound and determined to alienate
every one of you while he runs our country.
Did you know that less than half of us voted for him? We, too, are appalled by many of his words
and actions. Americans, as people
of most nations do, tend to rally around their leader when there is
trouble and we have done that since the September 11th atrocity
that took place here. We need
a strong leader when confrontation is imminent.
That does not, however, mean that we agree with everything that
our government does or says. We
are greatly pained in the knowledge that there are so many people in
the world who hate Americans. We don’t understand it.
We do not believe that our government, elected freely by us, is trying
to control the oil reserves of our planet. We do not understand why our government continues to back countries
like Israel, which has ignored and broken more United Nations resolutions
than any country in history. It
is genuinely a mystery to us why we should, as a nation, risk world-wide
scorn and wrath by propping up a country that has no effect on our national
security and makes a practice of maintaining a war footing against all
of its neighbors. Most of us
would be content to see Israel accept international law, withdraw from
seized territory, allow the Palestinians to have a homeland again, and
let everyone live happily ever after.
We, as a people, do not believe in this lopsided arrangement.
We genuinely believe that we are the good guys. We are not interested in conquering other lands
or people. Matter of fact, the
most significant miscalculation by the terrorists who attacked us was
in not understanding that if you leave us alone, we would probably return
the favor. There are religious
fanatics, both abroad and here in the U.S., that simply cannot tolerate
others being different or living in ways contrary to their doctrine. They should all be ashamed. We do not relish sending our brothers, sisters,
sons and daughters to places that most of us will never see to wage
war. It is a painful thing to
send a loved one away to possibly die.
We have no understanding whatsoever; indeed we are horrified,
of zealots so willing to give their lives to destroying others. Americans need to feel strongly
about the cause of the conflict.
We do not all have to be same. There is room for us all. We
do not hate anyone for their practices or ways of life. We like our culture and, while it is frequently
of questionable nature, we do not push it on anyone. Yes, we make movies, TV programs, and the like
that are distributed. If no
one abroad were interested, it wouldn’t go anywhere, but our culture
is very popular and it drives the zealots mad.
Many people in America dislike most of it, as well. That is not our fault and it is not evangelism.
We are what we are. We want you to be who you are. There is no reason we cannot co-exist with
our different cultures and philosophies.
It’s difficult to believe that with so many great minds in the world,
that we cannot bring them together, rationally, and stay the Dogs of
War.
